Most Pichhwai paintings depict Lord Krishna in the form of Shrinathji i.e. a seven-year-old Krishna holding the Govardhan mountain. In these paintings, one can see different events and festivals like the Raas Leela, Janmashtami, Govardhan puja, etc depicted through the artwork of Pichhwai.

This art form, the origin of which dates back more than 400 years ago, is intricate and stunning artwork made on cloth that depicts the life of Lord Krishna. Legend has it that these paintings were first created to adorn the walls of temples, right behind the idols. Back in the day, these paintings were made on handspun starched cotton fabric. Artists would then draw on the fabric and later paint. The paint and even the brushes used back then were of course, natural and organic. The paintings show different incidents from Lord Krishna’s childhood, hence the Govardhan and cows are regular features in them.
