The Folk Art Of Nathdwara – Pichhwai

Very few art forms are as linked to the place that they originated from. The famous Pichhwais of Nathdwara, Rajasthan are inspired by the diety where Shrinathji as a young Lord Krishna is called in this town and can be found everywhere. The beautiful Pichhwai paintings of Shrinathji can be found not only in temples, but on walls outside and everywhere around. These paintings are said to be a perfect mixture of theatrics and devotion.

Most Pichhwai paintings depict Lord Krishna in the form of Shrinathji i.e. a seven-year-old Krishna holding the Govardhan mountain. In these paintings, one can see different events and festivals like the Raas Leela, Janmashtami, Govardhan puja, etc depicted through the artwork of Pichhwai.

This art form, the origin of which dates back more than 400 years ago, is intricate and stunning artwork made on cloth that depicts the life of Lord Krishna. Legend has it that these paintings were first created to adorn the walls of temples, right behind the idols. The characteristic features of Shrinathji as painted in Pichhwai paintings are a heavy body, large eyes, and a broad nose.

Back in the day, these paintings were made on handspun starched cotton fabric. Artists would then draw on the fabric and later paint. The paint and even the brushes used back then were of course, natural and organic. The paintings show different incidents from Lord Krishna’s childhood, hence the Govardhan and cows are regular features in them.

Pichhwai paintings depict festivals from the like of Lord Krishna when he was a child. Some of these festivals are Sharad Purnima, Janmashtami, Annakut, Gopashtami, Raas Leela, and Holi. This art form is very important to devotees and worshippers of Lord Krishna. A little known fact is that Pichhwai is also intricately embroidered by the talented weavers of Nathdwara.
