Impressionism was named after one of Monet’s paintings – Impression, Soleil Levant. Monet is known for his painting of waterlilies, but what many people don’t know is that he planted them too! He had created a Japanese-style garden with his house at Giverney near Paris. Here had a small pond in which he had planted white lilies. He later created the series Water Lilies based on this place in his garden where he had also built a humpbacked bridge to cross the pond.

Not just his garden, but Monet’s painting was also inspired by Japanese styles of painting. His work had great influences of Ukiyo-e Japanese art.

Despite all the fame, Monet didn’t live a lavish life. He faced a lot of financial hardships and it is said that not long after his son Jean’s birth, frustrated with the situation of his finances, Monet attempted suicide by drowning in the river Seine. His attempt failed but more misfortune followed him. His wife fell sick while pregnant with their second child and died when only 32 in the year 1879.

Monet has left behind a vast legacy of modern and contemporary art which even earned him a seat at the table in Artists’ Banquet by Kyung Min Nam.
